For some time now, I have been wanting to re-read Stephen Cope's The Wisdom of Yoga: A Seeker's Guide to Extraordinary Living. This is Cope's second book, and I think it's even better than his first in a variety of ways.
But this is not to be a book review.
Rather, I realized that it would be fun to read this book with you. If you choose, you could read along.
Every week -- usually on Mondays -- I'll write about one or more concepts that I find particularly intriguing in each chapter. A chapter at a time, a week at a time. After the introduction material, there are 15 chapters, so we'll finish the book around the beginning of September.
A summer book club sort of thing.
Feel free to read or not. Comment here or not. Or even write about it on your own blog and place a link in the comments -- or not.
There were a lot of things that stood out for me in the introductory material of Cope's book, but above all was this line:
The wisdom of the strivers emerges wherever seekers accept the radical responsibility for confronting reality directly. (Cope, xxxi)
The radical responsibility. I love this phrase.
Are you ready to take radical responsibility?
Are you ready to abandon what you think you know for the territory of the unknown?
Are you ready to be uncomfortable, to confront darkness, to engage in challenge and spiritual warfare?
Are you ready to be brave?
If your answer is yes (and I am thinking that it is), then what does this journey mean to you?
What are you setting out to discover?
Of course, expectations will be blown wide apart and ideas will be drowned in the brilliant light of experienced truth, but to set out, I think we need to have an inkling of why and what for.
Perhaps spend some time journaling about this: Why do I seek? For what do I seek?
Now I need to go find my pen and journal, because I, too, need some time with those questions...

Wonderful idea!
I've been designing a Summer Camp for myself and this fits in beautifully!
Besides the fact that I'd love to read this particular book - and sharing it too - count me in!
As to the answers to the questions - oh my, this will take some thought.
I've been wanting to read this book. I really enjoyed his first book too. Perhaps I should bump this book up to the top of my wishlist!
I'd love to join you! I've had this book for awhile (as well as his other one) and haven't read either. It seems like a really good time to start exploring these topics for me.
Count me in!
Count me in!
I've skimmed his first book on more than one occasion. I look forward to exploring this one along with you ~ and others :-)
In fact, after reading your post, I went to our libraries web site and put it on hold. Then I decided to pop over to my numerology forecast web site....and....amazingly enough (!) here's what the first sentence said:
Your lesson for this month is to take responsibility for where you are and what you are doing.
Could that BE any more perfect???
Hee, hee! Sounds like I'm on the right path! Thanks for helping me along it in your own special way, dear one.
I read your post before taking off for work, and on the way home from work, stopped at the library and picked up the book. Obviously, I'm in!
You sound like me. Or I sound like you. Doesn't matter! I read Cope's first book and if you think this one is better—I'm in!
this sounds interesting. radical responsibility sounds sort of like "crucifying one's own comfort zone."
these journal questions are really getting to me this will be a journal in constant change as it goes this summer...thanks!
I'm in, especially after I find the book...
I'll have to think on my answers to the questions though...more later.
OK, I'm in. I just sent off for the book and it should arrive tomorrow. I confess I was put off by reading the first paragraph in the Amazon preview thingy - it read like bad pulp fiction - but it became more interesting as it went on, and I trust your judgement.
Love what tinkerbell says: "crucifying one's comfort zone". Yike.
I LOVE Stephen, he's brilliant! I had the honor of studying with him at my first retreat for my Mindfulness Yoga and Meditation Training at Spirit Rock. One of these days I'll go to Kripalu to study more with him....
