Do You Need to Be Less Serious?

The roof line of the Cleveland building pictured above is not very practical, but there is a spontaneous beauty and joy and playfulness to it that immediately pleases the eye and makes the heart flutter at the daring of the architect.

These qualities can sometimes be lacking in our day to day lives as we get caught up in details and to-do lists and goals.

Spontaneous beauty and joy and playfulness, though, are as essential to the human heart as is a good workout.

To return to the Sci-Fi geekiness of our little Lilypad, Marcy and I mostly watch shows like Star Trek -- all the different variations.

As we watch, we are constantly giggling about how much I am a bit like a Klingon and a Vulcan at times.

Like a Klingon, I can be a bit territorial, protective, and grouchy -- but in the endearing way of Worf. And like a Vulcan, I have been known to say, along the lines of Tuvok, not everyone prizes the concept of fun as highly as humans.

But as I open up to parts of me previously shut down, as I dance and sketch, I become lighter and I can feel that human playfulness trying to reassert itself.

Blogging has been a huge contributor to this opening. Being an introvert, blogging has been an amazing way for me to develop some very deep friendships.

This Friday, one of those blogging friends will materialize right before my eyes, as Lisa of Nerdy Renegade News is coming for a few nights visit from Dayton, Ohio.

The old me, the more Vulcan-Klingon me, would never have done this. I would never have had a (physical) stranger come to stay at our house.

But this is the more evolved, playful me.

And I wish for more of this.

I wish for more playfulness.

I wish for more risk taking adventure.

I wish for more openness and softening of my protective shell.

May you feel as playful as a 5 year old again, where every day is a new adventure.

Do you think it's the season that reminds us that we need to remember to play? To be more open of others and less willing to stay safe, but stuck inside or 'portective' shells?

I'm wondering because of your great wish...

As Christine wishes so well for herself, so I lovingly and with intention wish for her, also!

As Christine wishes for herself, so I wish for her also. I hope you have a wonderful time. I have to keep watching myself so I don't seep into too much seriousness as well. May we both have a playful summer!

I love this picture blisschick - it's playfulness in action. I am definitely too serious - thanks for the reminder to lighten up. Maybe it's time for some Star Trek at my house this weekend also...

A recent and very untypical quick dance with my 7 year old before rushing out the door for the day was so much fun and reminded me I need to be spontaneous more often, as did your post. Thank you for sharing.

Oh Christine~I have had a similar experience in blogland. Coming out of my shell. Sharing & bearing all. Discovering others that talk my language. And making new friends. It has taught me SO much!
I love that you have opened your home & your heart to do something COMPLETELY new! Have a GREAT time...

Hi Christine,
I think that it is wonderful that you are having a blog friend come to visit I am sure it will be FUN.
My husband got me into Star Trek I was far to stuffy for this before him! I am so excited for the new incarnation of the show!
I feel this spirit of playfulness and all of the encouragement you send out. It makes your blog very attractive!
Namaste,
Vicki

My immediate answer to your question, when it popped up on my screen, was "YES!".

I recall that one of my F-words for this year is FUN!

As the year goes on (in the midst of recovering from deep grief, loss, sadness), I find myself seeking more and more fun, spontaneity, etc.

This summer, especially, seems to demand that I take life less seriously, relax, let go, breathe deep, and PLAY. This, of course, is one reason why my heart is so strongly calling me to go on another blogging adventure. It is almost as if I'm being pulled in the direction of getting on the road, visiting with you kindred souls, and seeing new sites. My very soul knows this is what I'm meant to be doing right now.

And in the face of doubt and others' questions, my response is...."If not now, when?".

Just a few more hours...hooray for us!

And, BTW, did you know I'm a bit of a Trekkie myself? Next Generation was my fav. HUGE crush on Capt. Picard! Oy!

See you soon :-D

I think I probably need to be more serious on the outside--stop making sarcastic jokes about life rather than living it--and a lot less serious on the inside--stop seeing life as a Greek tragedy in which everything is hopeless...thus leading to the dark humor on the outside...it gets complicated...may have to come up with a blog post of my own to unpack it...

Sarah! SCI-FI Girls UNITE! Funny. There is a guy in our writing group who so thinks of me as "writer" and "teacher" and "yogi" that he can't accept the fact that I love sci-fi. People are strange. :)

Ellen -- Yes. I wish for more fun for YOU! :)

Sara -- Oh, there will be pictures! How could two bloggers get together and not constantly be taking pictures! :)

Cyndee -- YAY for blogging and creating community and singing our truth!

YogaForCynics -- A few years ago, I went through a very traumatic death. I felt totally lost and in darkness. It hit me at that time that I had gotten WAY TOO Serious. And it turned out that some things I had always made fun of were what helped me the most to make sense of my life again. I had actually referred to certain writers as "freaks" in the past. Anyway, I decided that I would rather be "happy with the freaks than sad and lost with the so-called intellectuals."

You know that I know where you are coming from with the whole Yoga for Cynics thing. I get it. But yeah, maybe it's time for an evaluation of this approach.

I often think (from personal experience remember) that cynicism and snark are just ways to give up, to not be creative in our thinking, to stop dreaming and wishing, to shut ourselves off from possibility.
