However, to me (and this is a personal opinion) the Royal Family are a symbol of all the inequality and elitism in my country (the very fact that Kate is referred to as a "commoner" shows how far we have yet to come when it comes to equality!!!) and that, I'm afraid, I cannot celebrate.
I am celebrating the fact that my whole town is completely dead due to everyone else watching the wedding and I can get some peace and quiet :)
Funny thing, Rachel? MY country, founded, of course, on the most massive blood shed/murder EVER, has even more elitism and inequality -- without the royalty to point to.

Oh, right, OUR royalty is just called "corporations" and are still allowed, legally, to rape and pillage, here and anywhere on this planet.

My point is that I think we get a little glassy eyed over the pomp and circumstance because we have nothing like it, and it reminds us of things like civility and manners ... things sorely lacking in our daily lives.
I agree on all counts, Christine. And as a local newscaster commented just a few moments ago, with all the dark and awful things going on in the world, it was a lovely escape. I'll also admit, and without shame, that I woke up a bit earlier than usual this morning and watched the whole thing! It was fab! :-)
